Mission Accomplished?
This was written back on August 24, 2009 and it would appear that the author was right on the money with Tuesday's announcement of sending an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan.
They say that there are really only two tragedies to life. The first is obvious as you don't get what it is you want and desire. The second tragedy is that you DO get what you had desired (only to find out it's NOT what you really want after all). I think Obama and the Democrats are discovering the latter!
Bush was heavily criticized when he flew an airplane on to an aircraft carrier that bore the sign MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
The Democrats spent at least five years criticizing Bush for going to war in Iraq when the real war and the real bad guy,. Osama bin laden was in Afghanistan. The REAL WAR they concluded was Afghanistan and we were losing there because of our focus in Iraq.
Now the Democrats are pulling out of Iraq and the focus is on Afghanistan. What if we LOSE? What if things get WORSE? Did you know that we're in trouble there: there being where the Democrats wanted to be. Is pulling out and being seen as LOSERS an option? Is pouring more troops and money, not to mention the ever increasing loss of lives acceptable to the Democrat Left?
Military commanders with the NATO mission in Afghanistan told President Barack Obama's chief envoy to the region this weekend that they did not have enough troops to do their job, pushed past their limit by Taliban rebels who operated across borders.
Serious?
The commanders emphasized problems in southern Afghanistan, where Taliban insurgents continue to bombard towns and villages with rockets despite a new influx of U.S. troops, and in eastern Afghanistan, where the father-and-son-led Haqqani network of militants has become the main source of attacks against U.S. soldiers and their Afghan allies.
The possibility that more troops will be needed in Afghanistan presents the Obama administration with a new problem in dealing with a nearly 8-year-old war that has lost popularity at home, compounded by new questions over the credibility of the U.S.-backed Afghan government, which has just held an as-yet inconclusive presidential election beset by complaints of fraud.
Mission accomplished??
